Group show of artists working in a variety of media (painting, drawing, quilting, tile making, mixed media 3D structures), who have been using units of geometric origin to make their work. The central gathering concept of this show is construction from units as a form of ritual, with the methodical process of doing this work considered as a meditation on fragmentation and oneness. The Abstract Landscape takes plein-air landscape painting as a point of departure for a discourse on its inverse: abstract paintings, compositionally related to landscape traditions but entirely divorced from concepts of naturalism or impressionism. Whether by virtue of a distinct horizon line, the use of a coulisse or other framing devices, or specifically horizontal formats, the painters in this show will be abstractionists for whom the so-called non-objective is sourced in visual similes of the natural world.
