I’m Not Rappaport
Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson
Live theatre plays a vital role in the cultural landscape of the Hudson Valley, serving as a platform for artistic expression and community engagement. Through the magic of performance, we are inspired, challenged, and connected as an audience in meaningful ways. This year marks a significant milestone for Shadowland Stages, as it celebrates its 40th Anniversary Season. Nestled in the heart of Ellenville, NY, Shadowland Stages has been a beacon of professional theatre in the region, captivating audiences with its diverse array of productions for four decades. Kicking off this landmark season, their mainstage is thrilled to present Herb Gardner’s timeless comedy, “I’m Not Rappaport.” Running through June 29, this beloved play also marks its own 40th anniversary since its own Broadway premiere, making it a fitting choice to inaugurate the theatre’s celebratory season.
The production promises to be a theatrical tour de force. It features Tony Award winner Judd Hirsch in the role of Nat and is directed by Tony nominee Neil Pepe, whose expertise and vision are sure to bring fresh life to this classic. The cast is a lineup of distinguished talent, with Eugene Lee joining Hirsch as Midge, Cassie Beck as Clara, Zane Pais as The Cowboy, Jim Bracchitta as Danforth, Lena Pepe as Laurie, and Owen Campbell as Gilley.
Behind the scenes, the production boasts an impressive creative team. Lighting design is crafted by Tony-winner Ken Posner, known for his work on “Wicked,” while scenic design is handled by the talented duo Christopher and Justin Swader. Costume design by Lizzie Donelan, sound design by Jeff Knapp, props by Julia Register, and fight direction by Thomas Schall complete the ensemble, ensuring a top-tier theatrical experience.
Set against the iconic backdrop of a Central Park bench, “I’m Not Rappaport” follows the endearing and poignant journey of two spirited octogenarians. Nat, a fiery idealist, and Midge, a superintendent resisting societal invisibility, engage in a series of humorous and heartfelt exchanges that explore themes of aging, friendship, and resilience. The play’s humor and humanity resonate as strongly today as they did four decades ago, offering audiences a rich, relevant, and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
“Hirsch and Lee are masters of their craft. Getting to watch them work in this comedy is like watching an old vaudeville act with so much heart,” said Brendan Burke, the artistic director of Shadowland Stages. He expressed his excitement about the upcoming season, stating, “We’re thrilled and honored to offer this production as a celebration of 40 years of live theatre here at Shadowland; it’s a remarkable gift to us and our audiences.”
As Shadowland Stages opens its doors for this momentous 40th season, the Hudson Valley community is invited to celebrate a cherished cultural cornerstone. With a commitment to artistic excellence and community engagement, Shadowland Stages continues to inspire, entertain, and enrich the lives of its audiences.
