The 6th Annual Hudson Valley Gospel Festival
Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson
The history of gospel music in the Hudson Valley is a living tapestry woven from the region’s traditions, community resilience, and evolving expressions of faith. Rooted in the spirituals and hymns carried north through migration and revival movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, gospel took firm hold in African American congregations across Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Kingston, and surrounding towns. The community is invited to celebrate these traditions at the 6th Annual Hudson Valley Gospel Festival, taking place on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Family Partnership Center, located at 29 North Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie.
Today, the Hudson Valley’s gospel scene reflects both continuity and creativity—anchored in Sunday-morning worship, enlivened by praise dance and spoken word, and celebrated in regional gatherings where the power of collective voice continues to uplift, unify, and inspire. The Hudson Valley Gospel Festival is a beloved, family-friendly tradition, gathering choirs, praise teams, and dancers from across the mid-Hudson region for an afternoon of uplifting music, worship, and community celebration.
This year’s lineup reflects the depth and diversity of the region’s gospel community. The Hudson Valley Gospel Festival Choir, directed by Dinesa Hansen, will headline the program with dynamic harmonies and spirit-filled selections. They will be joined by the Ulster County Community Gospel Choir under the direction of Dennis Washington, bringing their signature blend of energy and inspiration. From Orange County, the Baptist Temple Church Praise Team, led by Pastor Dollyann Briggs, will lead the crowd in praise and worship. In contrast, the Hudson Lily of the Valley Praise Dance Team, led by Linda Molina, will add a powerful visual expression of faith through movement. Guiding the afternoon’s program as emcee is Pastor Evelyn Clarke, whose warmth and presence help set the tone for a welcoming, joyful gathering.
For generations, gospel music has been a vital part of Poughkeepsie’s cultural life—lifting spirits, strengthening community bonds, and giving voice to hope. The Hudson Valley Gospel Festival continues this legacy by creating a space where neighbors can come together to celebrate artistry, tradition, and the enduring power of song. Whether you are a longtime gospel music enthusiast or simply looking for an inspirational afternoon, the festival offers something for everyone.
The event is designed to be accessible and welcoming. While suggested admission tiers are available via pre-sale and at the door, sliding-scale tickets ensure that no one will be turned away. Families, friends, and neighbors are encouraged to attend and enjoy an afternoon of music, dance, and fellowship in the heart of Poughkeepsie. Come raise your voice, clap your hands, and be part of a community moment that resonates long after the final note.
