Epic Movie Scores
Melissa Dvozenja-Thomas, Executive Director, Arts Mid-Hudson
The soundtracks of the movies bring back memories in a way few other things can—of packed theaters, beloved characters, and stories that stayed with us long after the credits rolled. Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra (NDSO) is tapping into that magic as it welcomes the new year with Epic Movie Scores on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 7:30 p.m. at the Marriott Pavilion at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. Under the direction of Music Director Kathleen Beckmann and featuring returning guest artists Jiayi He, harmonica, and Marka Young, violin, the concert promises an evening of nostalgia, adventure, and cinematic sound.
Now celebrating its 20th season, NDSO was founded in 2006 to bring live orchestral music to northern Dutchess County and the greater Hudson Valley. That community-centered mission continues with this cinematic program, which blends familiar movie themes, exceptional local talent, and a thoughtful nod to American and British history.
“This season’s programming is inspired by the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States,” says Beckmann. “This film concert features many American movies with fictional and real-life heroes, as well as several western-themed scores. As a nod to the British part of our year-long theme, our final piece is a James Bond medley. What could be more British than 007?”
The concert’s finale, James Bond Medley for Orchestra, promises to be a highlight. Arranged by Ingo Luis, the work weaves together some of the most beloved themes in film history, including the legendary “James Bond Theme” from Dr. No, “You Only Live Twice,” “Diamonds Are Forever,” “Goldfinger,” “Live and Let Die,” “The Man with the Golden Gun,” and “All Time High” from Octopussy. Audiences can expect sweeping strings, unmistakable brass lines, and the kind of suspenseful energy that has defined Bond films for generations.
The evening also showcases music that pairs cinematic storytelling with emotional depth. Violinist Marka Young—NDSO’s former long-time concertmaster and current Assistant Concertmaster of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic—will perform selections from John Williams’ score to Schindler’s List. Written for and immortalized by violinist Itzhak Perlman in the film, this haunting music is widely regarded as one of Williams’ most moving works. Young, known for her warm tone and expressive style, is a returning audience favorite with NDSO and has appeared as a soloist nationwide.
Another crowd-pleasing feature of the program is the inclusion of western-themed film scores, bringing a distinctly American flavor to the evening. Selections include Ennio Morricone’s evocative Man with a Harmonica and Once Upon a Time in the West, featuring harmonica virtuoso Jiayi He. An internationally recognized artist, He has performed at major venues such as Carnegie Hall and the United Nations, and has appeared on numerous television networks. His ability to draw unexpected color and drama from the harmonica makes these classic themes especially vivid in live performance.
Tickets are $38 per person, with discounts available for seniors and students. A family package is offered at $40 for one adult and two students. Whether you’re a film buff, a Bond fan, or simply looking for a memorable way to start the new year, Epic Movie Scores promises an evening of familiar melodies and symphonic excitement close to home.
