Workshop Description: Every arts organization is unique. The structure of its board of directors should reflect the unique needs of the mission, programs, and operations to meet this moment in time while setting up the organization for long-term success. In this workshop, we will contextualize nonprofit governance by first reviewing the basic requirements of a nonprofit board and the history that led to the predominant board structures that we see today. Then we will engage in workshop exercises to identify structures and processes that will activate your board to best govern - and serve - your organization. Grass-roots organizations and artist ensembles have particular needs that may vary from long-established producing or presenting institutions. We will discuss how to create the right board structure for your organization, and how to prepare it for future changes as the organization evolves.
